For thirty generations, the Douay-Rheims Bible was THE standard English translation of God’s Word.  Originally composed between 1582-1610, the DRB is a faithful translation from the Latin Vulgate Bible of St. Jerome (declared authoritative by the Council of Trent).  It was instrumental in supporting the Counter-Reformation in England - and even influenced the composers of the Protestant King James Version!  Considered so dangerous to the Reformation, owning this Bible was a crime in England for almost 150 years.

Writing in exile and without access to many of St. Jerome’s primary sources, or those of modern scholars, the composers of the DRB produced a timeless classic translation that endures in value and beauty today.  Subsequent minor revisions have made the text more readable to modern eyes, such as this Challoner version that dates from 1749.

This beautiful, bonded leather hardbound version is easy to read, portable (6” x 9”), and durable.  It makes a magnificent gift to anyone, for any occasion.  Or if you feel like being a little bit rebellious, buy one for yourself and experience the Bible that fed countless saints and martyrs (and terrified the English Reformers!).

Our hope is that every Catholic family will own a well-worn copy of the Douay-Rheims in addition to their other favorite translations of God’s Word.
